“Cockroaches” is really two different problems wearing the same name, and knowing which one you have changes everything about fixing it. One is an outdoor insect that wanders inside; the other is an indoor breeding machine that never leaves. Treat the second like the first and you will be treating it forever.
The big outdoor species
The large cockroaches — Australian, American, smoky brown — live outside in mulch, drains, compost and roof voids, and come indoors through the warm months looking for water. They are alarming at thirty millimetres but they are visitors: they do not establish breeding populations in your kitchen. This is the cockroach problem the annual general pest treatment is built for — interior, roof void and exterior perimeter treated in one warranty-backed visit, cutting off the routes in.
German cockroaches are a different animal
German cockroaches are small — under fifteen millimetres, tan with two dark stripes — and they live their entire lives indoors, packed into the warm crevices of kitchens: behind fridges and dishwashers, inside cupboard hinges, around motors and warm appliances. One female’s egg case carries thirty to forty young, generations overlap, and populations explode in weeks. Seeing them in daylight means the harbourages are crowded, which means the problem is established.
Why the treatment is staged
An established German cockroach population cannot be fixed in one visit, because egg cases protect the next generation from the treatment that removes the current one.
