The biggest doors are the actual doors: fit door sweeps and seals where daylight shows underneath, repair torn flyscreens rather than living with them, and screen the windows that stay open on summer nights. Wandering spiders — huntsman, wolf spiders, white-tails — follow these routes in, and this single layer does more than everything else combined.
Weep holes: cover, never block
Brick homes breathe through their weep holes, and those same slots admit spiders and other pests. The correct answer is purpose-made weep hole covers — mesh guards that keep the airflow and exclude the wildlife. Never seal or mortar weep holes closed: they exist to drain and ventilate the wall, and blocking them trades a spider problem for a moisture problem, which invites worse tenants than spiders.
Gaps, lighting and the perimeter
Seal the gaps where pipes and cables enter walls. Swap bright white exterior globes for warm/yellow-toned lighting near doors — white light pulls in the insects spiders follow, so dimming the buffet thins the diners. Keep vegetation trimmed off walls and windows, and store the perimeter clutter — stacked timber, pots, boxes against the house — up and away, since it is harbourage for both the spiders and their prey.
The honest limits
