Silverfish are the pest people tolerate longest — small, silent, and only ever seen for a second before they vanish under a skirting board. The tolerance is a mistake. Silverfish eat starches and cellulose, which in a house means book bindings, paper, photographs, wallpaper paste, and the sizing in natural-fibre clothing. The damage is slow, quiet and permanent, and by the time it is obvious in a stored box of books, a population is well established.
Why your home suits them
Silverfish want three things: darkness, moisture and starch. Queensland homes supply all three — humid wardrobes and linen cupboards, boxes in garages and roof voids, bathrooms and laundries with steady moisture, and paper stored anywhere quiet. They are also remarkably patient, able to survive months between meals, which is why an infestation persists through a tidy-up that would starve most pests.
Making your home worse for them
Moisture control is the biggest lever: fix slow leaks, ventilate bathrooms and wardrobes, and avoid storing cardboard directly on concrete floors, which wick damp. Store valued books, photos and documents in sealed plastic tubs rather than cardboard boxes — cardboard is both pantry and shelter to a silverfish. Vacuum along skirting boards and inside wardrobes occasionally; eggs sit in exactly those crevices.
When treatment is the answer
Sightings every few days, damage to stored items, or the distinctive yellow stains and pepper-like droppings in cupboards mean the population has outgrown housekeeping.
