The most common flea story goes like this: the pet is treated, the carpets are vacuumed, the fleas disappear — and two weeks later they are back, worse. Nothing failed; the life cycle just finished a lap. Understanding it is the difference between fighting fleas repeatedly and ending them once.
The life cycle is the whole problem
Adult fleas on the pet are around five per cent of the infestation. The rest is invisible: eggs shed into carpet and bedding, larvae feeding deep in the fibres, and pupae — the armoured stage — which resist almost every treatment and can lie dormant for months. Pupae hatch when they sense a host: warmth, vibration, footsteps. This is why empty rentals erupt with fleas the day someone moves in, and why a treated home can rebound weeks later as the dormant generation wakes.
Breaking it properly
The cycle only breaks when every stage is addressed at once. The pet stays on its vet-recommended treatment so adults cannot re-establish. The home gets hot-washed pet bedding, thorough vacuuming — which also triggers pupae to hatch into the treatment rather than after it — and a professional flea treatment across carpets, soft furnishings and the outdoor areas pets use, because yards reseed houses. Then patience: seeing a few fleas in the fortnight after treatment is the dormant pupae hatching into a treated environment and dying, not the treatment failing.
